Potten End crossroads – raised junction

446 people or c. 40% of village residents responded to a survey conducted in November and December 2025 about whether a raised platform should be installed at the Potten End crossroads.

  • 426 of those respondents or 96% were in favour,
  • 14 were against
  • 6 were neutral.

282 people added comments illustrating the depth of feeling about speeding through the village and the safety of that junction.

The objective of the raised platform is to slow vehicles travelling along The Common and Water End Road to reduce the incidence of accidents at the junction and make crossing the road safer for pedestrians.

The plan on the left below shows the design concept, and on the right is a photo of a similar installation at Welwyn Garden City.

At the moment the only lighting near the junction is outside 1 The Green, a short distance away from the junction, and it’s possible that this would need to be moved or additional lighting installed. This technical detail would be determined once a decision is taken to proceed.

And just in case you’re not certain where the junction is, it’s circled in red on the map below.
